One of the most common questions people have about paintball is whether or not it hurts to be hit by a paintball marker. Although paintball is generally a very safe sport, players do feel paintball hits, and under certain circumstances hits can be painful. In addition to preventing injuries, wearing protective gear helps players avoid the pain that’s sometimes associated with paintball hits.
A variety of factors affect how a paintball will feel upon impact. One of the biggest factors is the speed with which the paintball is fired. Paintball markers have varying muzzle velocities, and velocities are adjusted by players as it affects accuracy as well as how far markers shoot. High velocities are a necessary part of paintball, and players should prepare for high speed hits by wearing protective gear to guard against pain and prevent injuries.
Proximity also affects how hard a player is hit with a paintball and how much it will hurt. Most paintball marker manufacturers recommend players maintain a minimum 20 foot distance when shooting. The closer you are to the shooter when hit with a paintball, the faster the paintball will be traveling. You’ll feel a hit less if you are further away from the shooter.
The type of clothing and protective gear being worn has a very big effect on how it feels to be hit with a paintball. When bare skin is hit with a paintball, it’s likely to bruise. A player that’s wearing a chest protector isn’t likely to feel a hit in the chest much at all, however.
Paint ball hits may be barely felt at all, or they can be quite painful and even dangerous without protective gear. Players should always wear heavy pants or jeans, long sleeve shirts, vests or jackets and proper protective gear for the head, neck, face, chest and groin area for men.
